Mosquito Prevention: Protect Your Home & Community
With warmer weather and seasonal rains, mosquito activity increases across our area. The Town of Rancho Viejo encourages all residents to take proactive steps to reduce mosquito breeding and protect your family.
✅ Best Practices to Prevent Mosquito Overpopulation
1. Eliminate Standing Water (Every 3–5 Days)
Mosquitoes can lay eggs in very small amounts of water.
•    Empty flower pot saucers
•    Dump buckets and containers
•    Change pet water bowls frequently
•    Clear clogged gutters
•    Drain and refresh birdbaths
•    Remove water from tarps and pool covers
2. Maintain Your Yard
•    Keep grass trimmed and landscaping neat
•    Remove yard debris and leaf piles
•    Properly dispose of old tires and unused containers
3. Protect Your Home
•    Repair window and door screens
•    Use EPA-approved insect repellents when outdoors
•    Consider mosquito dunks for standing water that cannot be drained (ponds, drainage areas)
4. Be a Good Neighbor
•    Report abandoned pools or properties with excessive standing water
•    Encourage neighbors to follow prevention steps
🛑 Remember: Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap of water and can mature in as little as 7 days.
Together, we can reduce mosquito populations and help prevent mosquito-borne illnesses in our community.
